Sustainable Finance Success Story| Financing Egypt’s leading circular leather complex

As part of its sustainable finance strategy, ADCB Egypt financed the Leather Industries Complex in the Robiki Leather City. This industrial complex extends over an area of 210,000 square meters, it is considered the largest of its kind in Africa and the Middle East.

It includes several integrated projects:

  1. A leather tanning and finishing factory.
  2. A recycling plant that converts leather waste from tanning factories, shoes and leather products factories, and project waste into solid organic fertilizers.
  3. The largest edible and pharmaceutical gelatine production plant, considered one of the largest projects in the Middle East and Africa in this field.
  4. A mixing and assembly plant for tanning chemicals.

The project adopts a circular economy model, transforming waste into valuable products and reducing environmental damage. Using advanced, environmentally friendly technologies, the project supports the local production of organic nitrogen fertilizers, reducing dependence on imports, and also supports exports to international markets in addition to the local market. It promotes the export of processed leather and the use of the lower layer of leather for the production of edible and pharmaceutical gelatin, which will be used in edible and pharmaceutical factories globally, in addition to the local market. The complex is located within a fully equipped industrial zone and benefits from access to key infrastructure, including water, sewage, electricity, and natural gas networks. The project is expected to provide more than 1,000 jobs and significantly contribute to reducing industrial waste.

An environmental risk assessment was conducted to ensure full compliance with Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency regulations and sustainability best practices. The project includes preliminary treatment of solids in wastewater before sending it to the central treatment plant in the industrial zone in Robiki. This is a project that takes into consideration the environmental impact of all production outputs, including water.
